Geocache Description:


Josephsdorf
Josephsdorf was a small village in Zemplén County, Hungary, until 1911, until it was unified with Sárospatak. Its Hungarian name is Józseffalva which means Joseph's Village. The village has only one street, currently named St. Joseph Street. The village was founded during the reign of Jospeh II of Hungary (also the Holy Roman Empire and the Habsburg Empire) and it was named after him. The village used to be inhabited by catholic germans at that time. It's really close to Sárospatak, so it was also called Új-Patak, which means New Creek from the name of sárospatak.(Which means Muddy Creek btw.) There wasn't a school at the village, so students had to go to study in Sárospatak, where the language of education was hungarian, so their assimilation happened fast. Some of the families preserved their german traditions and language until the 20th century, but unfortunately nowdays these traditions are desappearing. In the 2010s an organisation was founded (Józseffalváért Egyesület) to save the traditions of the village, they have built a folklore house for example. The village has an Eastern Cathilic Church, but the locals used to use the Catholic Chapel, which is in the centre of the village. The cache is there too, hidden around the well, on the opposite of the chapel.

 

Józseffalva
Józseffalva (német nevén: Josephsdorf) kis falu volt Zemplén Vármegyében 1911-ig, ekkor a közvetlenül mellette fekvő Sárospatakhoz csatolták. A falu egyetlen utcából áll, mai neve Szent József utca. A falut II. József idejében alapították és katolikus németeket telepítettek be, innen kapta a nevét. Sárospatakhoz való közelsége miatt gyakran Új-Pataknak is nevezték. A faluban iskola nem működött, a diákoknak Patakra kellett bejárniuk és ott is csak magyar nyelven tanulhattak, így a lakosság asszimilációja hamar megtörtént, de a német hagyományokat, kultúrát és bizonyos családok még a nyelvük helyi változatát is sokáig megőrizték, viszont ezeknek sajnos mára már csak a nyomai látszanak, amit az is jelez, hogy a 2010-es években létrejött helyi egyesület nevében az eredeti német településnév helyett a falu magyar neve szerepel. A Józseffalváért Egyesület egyébként létrehozott egy sváb tájházat a faluban. Itt található még egy görög katolikus templom, ám a helyiek inkább a katolikus kápolnát használták, a rejtés is itt található és az a falu legrégebbi nevezetessége. A kápolnában egy régi harang is van. A láda a kápolnával szemben a kútnál van elrejtve.
