Geocache Description:

You are looking for a micro on a boardwalk at GZ of what used to be Fort Buhlow.  There is a $4 entry to the site per person due to this being a LA State Park.  The boardwalk near ground zero is not a direct route to the cache, but that makes it more fun!

Fort Randolph and Buhlow:

Fort Buhlow and Fort Randolph were earthwork/moat fortifications constructed beginning October 1864 by Confederate forces anticipating a repetition of Union Gen. Nathaniel Banks' Summer 1864 Red River Expedition.  Construction, completed by March 1865, was under the Lieut. A. Buhlow, for whom the fort is named.  The work was preformed under command of Capt. C. M. Randolph, for who the fort is named.  The work was preformed by about 1500 soldiers and civilian workers and 500 slaves.  A third and larger fort, planned for the Alexandria side of the river, was never built.  There was a Confederate troop buildup in the Alexandria area in March 1865, and the Confederate ironclad Missouri was anchored in the river opposite Fort Randolph, but the antipated attack never came and no fighting ever took place.  In May of 1865, Gen. Simon Buckner surrendered all Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi area and Union forces under Gen. Phillip Sheridan occupied Fort Buhlow and Fort Randolph in June of 1865.

You will find this cache just out of eye sight at the top of the highest point of Fort Buhlow.  Enjoy the history, plaques and structures on your walk to GZ.
