Geocache Description:

Cathedral of San Juan Bautista of Calama

This is located in the Plaza 23 de Marzo, between murals, pools and the shade of old peppers.

One of the first chapels that Calama had, was located on Balmaceda Avenue, in front of the railway station, which burned down in 1906. That same year, on January 22, 1906, the corresponding decree was issued. to the San Juan Bautista de Calama Parish.

It is precisely Father José Franta, who deserves a separate chapter in the installation of a definitive structure that will house the Catholic faithful and which was located next to Plaza 23 de Marzo.

It is said that Father Franta, from dawn to dusk, worked with a coverall full of patches, laying the foundations or raising the walls of what would be the church that he had planned, along with masons and assistants.

Already in the year 1927, it ended, at least in its essential details to the current temple of Calama, which otherwise would be renovated years later.

Pope Paul VI, in 1965, created the Prelature of Calama, through whose constitution book, it was determined that the parish of San Juan Bautista was elevated to the Cathedral Headquarters.

In 2001, with the collaboration of Codelco, the roof was covered with copper extracted and processed in the Chuquicamata mine, and its ore tower in the Radomiro Tomic division, using 960 copper sheets of 0.8 mm thickness.
