The other day, my friend and I brought our bikes to Columbia to ride on the pathways. I have a mountain bike with 26" wheels, and my friend has a road bike with 29" wheels. Just for fun, we rode separate routes, so we could compare notes at the end of the day. Columbia has some steep hills, and when you're riding your bike on hills, you need to use multiple gears. As we were riding, we decided to write down the gear combinations we used to ride on different sections of trail. (You never know when that info might come in handy!)
Here are my notes:
Mile 1: Steep uphill. 36 tooth front chainring, 24 tooth rear sprocket
Mile 2: Steep downhill. 50 tooth front chainring, 12 tooth rear sprocket
Mile 3: Gentle uphill. 42 tooth front chainring, 17 tooth rear sprocket
And here are my friend's notes:
Mile 1: Flat. 42 tooth front chainring, 16 tooth rear sprocket
Mile 2: Moderate uphill. 36 tooth front chainring, 21 tooth rear sprocket
Mile 3: Steep uphill. 36 tooth front chainring, 30 tooth rear sprocket
Mile 4: Moderate downhill. 56 tooth front chainring, 18 tooth rear sprocket
I'm not sure we'll ever get much use out of this data, but we sure had fun riding our bikes around Columbia. Oh, and we even hid a cache while we were out!
