Number 13 in a series of caches to celebrate all those local pubs that we have lost over time either to being converted for other uses such as housing or restaurants, or have been demolished and something else built on the site.
The Corner House, City Centre
The Corner House (later known as Jumping Jacks) was situated at 111 New George Street. It was closed in September 2009 after the pub was found to be serving people underage. The Corner House was built in 1961 to replaced the demolished Barley Sheaf pub in King Street which was about 50m from this location. Originally the Corner House was called The Barley Sheafin honour of the demolished establishment.
The Corner House was recently demolished in July 2017 by Plymouth City Council. According to the planning application the reasons for the demolition of the Corner House were:
1) To allow for future development of the West End of the City Centre
2) To reduce the maintenance costs to the Local Authority
3) To reduce Health & Safety liability to the Local Authority
The site has currently been left level using crushed stone and hoarding has been errected around it to protect the public from potential harm
The picture below is from the pub's time when it was known as Jumping Jacks
If you would like to expand this series the pub in question must meet this criteria: The pub must be closed and no longer able to operate as a pub again. Eg. The pub has been knocked down, turned into flats or a supermarket, etc.
The pub does not qualify if it is just closed or boarded up as it can still be used for its purpose and therefore not "lost" just unavailable at present.
If the location meets this criteria please contact The Cooke Family through the messaging centre here https://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=e6925df2-b8d1-4661-adb9-1488a3cb414d so that they can issue your lost pub its unique number and add it to the database.
