Established in the 1950s, the underground room here would have been the Control and Command centre for the Dunmow area in the event of a nuclear war. It would have been manned by a team of three, drawn from members of the Royal Observer Corps (monitoring radiation levels) and Civil Defence volunteers (providing local command, in radio communication with the Regional/National Bunker at Kelvedon Hatch, which is now a local tourist attraction). They would have had sufficient 'iron ration' food supplies for several weeks incarceration.
