A BIG DIGGING PROJECT OF A 4-LANE HIGHWAY TRENCH -- 100 FEET DEEP
They are now digging a big chunk out of a south end portion of the old Air Field, that when finished, will have a deeply buried, cut-and-cover HIGHWAY 58 BYPASS TUNNEL, topped with a new Township Park.
The tunnel will be over 300 feet long, and join other road bridges that will eventually cross HIGHWAY 58 between ROUTE 6 and the air field. The new Highway 58 will pass UNDER Route 6 near Torii Station.
After passing under 6, then under the other bridges, and through the long tunnel, this sloping 58 bypass will come out on grade along the old MAIN RUNWAY, then head north right up the same MAIN RUNWAY.
After leaving the former Air Field area, it will curve over and rejoin old Highwayy 1 / 58 just north of the place with the big Bull and Pigs on the front lawn

Check out the geological profile --- nothing but coral all the way down. The high and level airfield (now, mostly farms) used to be a large tidal flat along the sea, and who knows how far down this old sea bed really goes.
