What: 9 mile night paddle
When: Saturday, 01/27/18, 4pm to 2am
Where: Wekiva River/St Johns River, from Wilson's Landing to Highbanks Boat Ramp
“You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young."
"Why, what did she tell you?"
"I don't know, I didn't listen.”
― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
How many bad ideas, can we combine in to one trip? Let's see!
We'll be paddling an area bristling with alligators, at night.
We'll be paddling an area bristling with drunken boaters, at night.
We'll be paddling, at night, when it's colder than a Wiccan practicioner's upper chest area, in a brazziere built of a copper/zinc alloy.
(Sigh...)
But, on the plus side, those who survive will have a most awesome adventure to brag about!
Surely, that's worth the possibility of a gruesome death, right?
We'll gather at the posted coordinates, Wilson's Landing, at 4pm, and see how many nuts... Uh... I mean, awesomely brave people, are going to join this quest. Then we'll shuttle some cars to the take out point, Highbanks Marina boat ramp, before splashing our boats and paddling north. You will need, at a minimum, a PFD that fits you, a whistle, and a white light, capable of shining in 360 degrees. (For you Gators fans, that means a flashlight) Other suggestions would be bug spray, water, snackage, and dry clothes, waiting at the other end. I suspect we'll be off the water not much later than 10pm, but I added a few hours, just in case.
Hope to see you there!
Post script: If you need a kayak, give a shout. Between my extra boats, and those belonging to others, we should be able to sit you in a kayak. If you want to attend without paddling, show up at either the launch, or the landing, and help with boats.
