It is always quite fascinating when reviewing industries to discover Who Owns Whom. Over years companies buy brands/companies etc. in order to gain dominance in certain market sectors – Mergers and Acquisitions. While brands are at times assimilated into the acquiring company, very often these are retained as separate entities in the event that they should be sold off again once they have served their strategic purpose. Over recent years, legislation has forced companies to shed certain brands when acquiring another, SAB-Miller being a prime example. Fortunately there are companies who’s job it is to keep track of all of this, even for companies which are not publicly listed, and they publish volumes of information in the Who Owns Whom.

In the organized crime world, similar structures are used for nefarious purposes in order to hide entities and to primarily launder money, dodge taxes, get around legislative restrictions, through complex ownership and trade models. Law enforcement agencies can spend years trying to unravel these complex models, having to trace and unravel the minutest detail to discover who is hiding behind whom and who really owns whom or what, names can be deceiving. Once they manage to unravel the web of deceit, they check the sums, dot the I’s and cross the t’s and hopefully the whole package comes together in order to achieve a successful conviction and bag the prize.
