Geocache Description:

“... strange eyes wide open in the waters of the beginning and the end
D.H. Lawrence

The striking remains at the listed coordinates suggest an enormous beast 30m long that would have weighed around 170 tonnes. A given age of 20.07 million years would have placed it in the Early Miocene epoch of the Tertiary Time Period.

At that time the dinosaurs were extinct and the surviving birds, mammals and reptiles diversified.

Tropical and temperate forests covered large areas of Australia. The area we know as Bass Strait was largely dry land with floodplains, lakes and peaty swamps bordered by forest, and seams of brown coal had begun to form.

High sea levels frequently covered parts of the continent and the skeletons of animals that thrived there created the large volume of limestone deposits that now form most of the coast along southern Australia.
