Radio Flyers Field
The cache, a camo’ed push-topped sample tube is hidden at the entrance to the Zeekoevlei flying field of the Peninsula Radio Flyers, a local group of the South Africa Model Aircraft Association. It is one of the most popular such fields in Western Cape.
To access the False Bay Nature Reserve / Zeekovlei and reach the cache location: take the M17 Strandfontein Road as far as S34 03.195 E 18 31.767 the junction with Dollardbird Road. Neither the road name or the reserve are currently signposted off the M17. Turn west and after 200m at the traffic circle take the 2nd exit Zeekoevlei Road to the entrance gate. After recording your entry, entrance is free. Simply follow the main road as it curves around to the south and on to the cache location. See here for a map of the Reserve.
According to the sign on the gate, ‘Visitors are Most Welcome’, so it should be possible to enter the site and watch the activities of the flyers. As I was placing the cache, a plane was being put through its paces undertaking some impressive aerobatics over the vlei and adjacent wetlands.
The whole area is a paradise for the many species of wetland birds which
gather in profusion both on and around the vlei and particularly on the nearby water treatment ponds of the Strandfontein Sewage Works where one can enter for free and enjoy a few hours of ornithological appreciation. Highlights include Greater Flamingo, Pelicans and (if lucky) Fish Eagles.
