Geocache Description:

Kirkby Stephen is a small market town in Cumbria. The town is located on the A685, surrounded by sparsely populated hill country, and about 25 miles from the nearest larger towns, Kendal and Penrith, and 12 miles from Junction 38 of the M6. The town has many cafes, pubs and fish & chips shops for refreshment and there is a large (free) car park, GC65X9Y, situated in Silver Street 100 yards from the town centre.

This series of caches are placed in a loop starting and finishing in Kirkby Stephen and going anti-clockwise via Soulby, Crosby Garrett and Waitby. Although the whole loop (11 miles) may be completed on foot this is not advised as these country roads are surprisingly busy and do not make for comfortable or safe walking. The route is best followed on bicycles, if you do not bring your own they are available for hire in Kirkby Stephen, electric bikes are also available. Car drivers should not leave cars unattended across gates or bridleways. Information on food, accommodation and cycle hire is available from Kirkby Stephen TIC (restricted winter opening times). There is short term parking available for one car at the majority of the cache sites; if there is no suitable adjacent parking place this will be mentioned below.

Some caches contain a pencil as well as a log, some are also large enough for small swaps and Trackables. Many of the smaller caches do not have room for a pencil, please bring your own, tweezers may also be useful. Please do not claim a find if you have not signed the log. No caches are placed in walls. All caches are accessible from the public highway and there is no need to enter private property to find them. Road side verges and bridle ways can be very soft and muddy so waterproof boots or walking shoes are advised in wet conditions. Some of these minor roads can be very busy, children should be closely supervised. Some caches have no hint to make the circuit more “interesting”. Please replace caches exactly where found.

Your GPSR reception may be affected by the proximity of the railway viaduct. I have taken several average readings but the hint may give additional assistance. You may not get mobile phone reception at this location.
