La chiesa originale di Lignano, costruita nel 1936 e concepita per una comunità di poche centinaia di persone, era diventata troppo piccola in seguito all'aumento esponenziale degli abitanti e dei turisti che ha interessato la cittadina balneare nei decenni successivi.
Varie operazioni di ampliamento si succedettero negli anni, ma solo tra il 1989 e il 1991, demolendo la vecchia chiesa, il Duomo è stato completato, affidando i lavori all'Ingegner Ermes Vendruscolo.
La parte superiore della Chiesa superiore, più ampia, è stata intitolata alla Madonna dell'Adriatico e delle sue genti, mentre la Cripta ha mantenuto la dedicazione a San Giovanni Bosco.
La concezione archittetonica della Chiesa superiore è dinamica nel gioco ridondante dei volumi, sviluppato attorno al perno cenrale dell'altare, prolungato all'esterno dall'audacissima guglia, nel plasticismo del soffitto in cemento armato, che si gonfia come le vele di un'imbarcazione sospinte dal vento, nonché nel ricco cromatismo delle vetrate, a simboleggiare l'esaltazione della luce e del mare.
L'interno della Cripta è ad aula unica: l'altare è sorretto da tre pilastri a bassorilievo realizzati nel 1949 dall'artista latisanese Lionello Galasso (1924-2008), provenienti dalla vecchia chiesa, come il tabernacolo e le colonnine che sostengono il fonte battesimale. A fiancheggiare il grande Cristo crocifisso centrale, sono state riportate le statue della Madonna con Bambino, realizzata da un artista di Ortisei, e di San Giovanni Bosco, realizzata nel 1936 dal Gruppo di Cooperatori Salesiani di Udine (Istituto Bearzi), che la donò riconoscente alla comunità di Lignano per aver scelto il Santo patrono come proprio titolare.

Lignano's original church, built in 1936 and designed for a community of a few hundred people, had become too small following the exponential growth of residents and tourists that affected the seaside town in the following decades.
Various expansion projects followed over the years, but only between 1989 and 1991, after the demolition of the old church, the current cathedral was completed, with the work entrusted to engineer Ermes Vendruscolo.
The upper and largest part of the church was dedicated to Our Lady of the Adriatic and its people, while the crypt maintained its dedication to Saint John Bosco.
The architectural concept of the upper church is dynamic in the redundant play of volumes, developed around the central pivot of the altar, extended outwards by the very bold spire, in the plasticity of the reinforced concrete ceiling, which swells like the sails of a ship driven by the wind, as well as in the rich chromaticism of the stained glass windows, symbolizing the exaltation of light and the sea.
The interior of the crypt consists of a single nave: the altar is supported by three bas-relief pillars created in 1949 by the Latisana artist Lionello Galasso (1924-2008), which were brought from the old church, as were the tabernacle and the columns supporting the baptismal font. Flanking the large central crucified Christ are the statues of the Madonna and Child, created by an artist from Ortisei, and of Saint John Bosco, created in 1936 by the Salesian Cooperators Group of Udine (Bearzi Institute), who donated it in gratitude to the community of Lignano for choosing Saint John Bosco as patron saint.
