Moyock comes from an Algonquin Indian name.
It means “place of the oak on the trail”.
It appears on a map as early as 1735.
SHINGLE LANDING
Was named for the shingles made for Dismal Swamp cypress.
Currituck Sound and the surrounding area were under Union
control by 1863. Local farmers and merchants sought permission
from Federal authorities to sell their produce in Norfolk.
A This community near Shingle Landing Creek was a gateway to Norfolk.
The name became official in 18A7 when the post office was established.
