Santa Maria la Longa è un piccolo centro agricolo nel cuore della pianura friulana, a metà strada tra Udine e Palmanova lungo la strada statale SR352. Durante la Grande Guerra si trovava in una posizione ottimale per far riposare le linee in retrovia in quanto non era lontana dal fronte ma abbastanza distante dagli attacchi austro-ungarici con le armi a lunga gittata. Per questo motivo, tra il 1915 ed il 1917 furono costruiti molti baraccamenti e molte strutture furono riconvertite per altre funzioni, come ospedali o sede di reparti militari.
Tra i molti soldati che trovarono riposo a Santa Maria ci furono Gabriele d'Annunzio e Giuseppe Ungaretti che proprio qui, durante il suo riposo nell'inverno del 1917, compose tre poesie: "Dormire", "Solitudine" e la famosissima "Mattina", capolavoro dell'ermetismo di sole due parole scritto il 26 gennaio del 1917: "M'illumino d'immenso".
In occasione dell'88° anniversario di questa poesia, l'amministrazione comunale ha inaugurato un monumento dedicato ad Ungaretti ad opera dello scultore friulano Franco Maschio. La statua, posta nella centrale Piazza Divisione Julia, raffigura un corpo che si alza e si inarca. Nei pressi sono presenti anche tre pietre carsiche dove sono state incise le tre poesie di Ungaretti.

Santa Maria la Longa is a small rural village in the heart of the Friulian plain, halfway between Udine and Palmanova on Road SR352. During the Great War, it was the perfect resting place for the troops in the rear line, as it was not too close to the front but far enough from the Austro-Hungarian long-distance weapon attacks. This is why here, between 1915 and 1917, several barracks were built and other facilities were converted to military use, such as camp hospitals and command posts.
Among the soldiers who enjoyed a break in Santa Maria were also Gabriele d'Annunzio and Giuseppe Ungaretti; during the winter of 1917, the latter wrote three pomes here: "Dormire", "Solitudine" and the famous "Mattino", a masterpiece of Hermeticism consisting of just 2 words written on 26th January 1917: "I am enlightened with immense" ("M'illumino d'immenso").
The local Municipal Administration inaugurated a monument dedicated to Ungaretti, created by Friulian sculptor Franco Maschio, on the occasion of the 88th-Anniversary of his poem. The statue, installed in the central Julia Division Square (Piazza Divisione Julia), represents a standing and arched body. Nearby, three karstic stones are engraved with three poems by Ungaretti.
