Metaphorically, a snowball effect is a process that starts from an initial state of small significance and builds upon itself, becoming larger and perhaps potentially dangerous or disastrous, although it might be beneficial instead. The common analogy is a snowball rolling down a hillside covered with snow. As the snowball rolls, it picks up more snow, gaining more mass and surface area, and picking up even more snow and momentum as it continues to roll along.
