Geocache Description:

Hoosier students will recall the Indiana History curriculum we had in fourth grade. To some the names, dates and places were boring. But it sparked in me a lifelong love of my state and its history. While my classmates idolized sports stars or celebrities the men and women who made Indiana and our nation what it is became my childhood heroes. To be truthful my home state is an interesting place filled with fascinating people and places, both past and present. Let's discover some together.

The Unknown Hero

History is a record of people and the events they took part in. However not all historic heroism has found it’s way into our records. Some because their acts predate our written history. Many because acts of everyday heroism often go unnoticed in spite of their importance. But this in no way diminishes their heroic nature. Heroism is defined as conduct especially as exhibited in fulfilling a high purpose or attaining a noble end. Typically we consider heros to be those who risk life and limb in pursuit of a cause. Heroes have explored new lands, rescued those in distress or brought forth new ideas. These acts are truly heroic be they recorded or not.

Thoughout Hoosier history men and women have also acted out smaller acts of heroism. Almost always without notice a meal was taken to the home of a person under the weather or a lawn was mowed for a military wife. Perhaps the loneliness of a widow was eased by a listening ear. These acts are truly heroic be they recorded or not. In this series we’ve explored the lives of some amazing Hoosier Heroes of History. Their contemporaries admired them and today we revere their achievements. They constitute a small community that few of us will join. But all of us have it within ourselves to be a Hoosier Hero. No, our deeds may not be inscribed in the annals of time, but our kind deeds can be as heroic to those in need as anyone wearing a medal on their chest.
