Geocache Description:

A simple offset cache (offset to comply with placement guidelines) designed to draw attention to this new memorial.

IMG 9701

Most of the war memorials in the UK were erected in the years immediately following the First World War, and subsequently added to as required. At the time, the village of Langstone chose not to erect a stone memorial but rather to commemorate their fallen on a plaque which was placed inside the village hall. In more recent years it was realised that this posed two quite significant problems. Firstly, accessibility. The memorial was only accessible when the hall was open (and when it was open it was usually in use for a function) making it difficult for the memorial to be seen by relatives and researchers, and secondly the memorial was incomplete as it did not include the names of those who lived in rural areas outside the boundary of the village as it was in the 1920s - and some of these people were not commemorated elsewhere.

The decision to build a new roadside memorial to include the names of those individuals from the surrounding areas, was taken in 2014, and the memorial was completed in 2017. In front of the memorial are also two commemorative benches.

To find the final cache, first find the plaque giving the details of Sergeant Richard Callear and another man and read their respective ages at the time they died. Subtract the age of the younger man from the age of the older man to get a value A. The older man's service number is a six-digit figure. Take the first THREE of those digits and and call them B, C and D. The cache can be found a short walk away at N51 36.21A W002 55.B(C+1)D.
