Porta Pescara è l’unica superstite delle otto porte che si aprivano nelle mura perimetrali della città di Chieti.
La Porta interna (step 1) venne eretta nel periodo Angioino intorno al 1250. La struttura si snoda intorno ad un arco ogivale decorato, al suo interno, da mensoline scolpite a fogliame. L’esterno della Porta è stata rimaneggiata in uno stile neoclassico molto asciutto; in essa spunta la fascia che incorona la facciata con decorazione di metope e triglifi. Porta Pescara rappresenta un importante simbolo della struttura urbana dell’epoca angioina prima che la città entrasse a far parte del Regno d’Italia. Successivamente l’opera di allargamento urbano, fece abbattere tutte le altre otto Porte della città.

La porta in basso (step 2), di recente restauro, è di costruzione settecentesca e veniva utilizzata per il pagamento del dazio.

[ENG] THE DOORS OF CHIETI - PORTA PESCARA

Porta Pescara is the only remaining door that enclosed the city in the past.
The first one (step 1) was built around 1250, in the Angevin period. It is made of an ogival arch decorated, inside, by corals carved in foliage. The exterior has been remodeled in a very simple neoclassical style; on the top the band that crowns the façade with decoration of metopes and triglyphs appears. Porta Pescara is an important symbol of the urban structure of the Angevin era before the city became part of the Kingdom of Italy. Subsequently, the urban enlargement work brought down all the other eight gates of the city.

The external door (step 2), recently restored, is of eighteenth century construction and was used for the duties payment.

The container is large enough to host small objects, trackables and coins. Souvenirs from everywhere are very welcome! But above all.. Enjoy the view right in front of you!!
