Clearfield County is full of old and historic locations, buildings and remnants of by gone eras. Come and cache Clearfield County to learn about its rich history through ghost towns, abandoned cemeteries, Civil War uprising and its rich Native American presence.
This is an easy cache and dash, but take a look around the area and imagine yourself lumbering in 1895. Lawshe (later Garee) is one of Clearfield County's lost lumbering towns. The founding fathers and lumbering contractors of the county built this saw mill town in about 1895. The hemlock timber here was was deemed too difficult to market, so to overcome this obstacle, the company dammed the creek for a log pond, erected a band mill and proposed a logging railroad. They build a tram road above the area where the cache lies. Look across the road and UP and you will see the tram rails. Continue NW on the dirt road for about 3/4 of a mile and you will see yet another abandoned rail bridge abutment. Lumber was cut in nearby Troutville and transported by steam engines over the tram road to the mill at Lawshe. The stone piers and abutments remain as well as the mill foundation.
