As written in the Raftsman’s Journal, dated August 20, 1885 describing the town of Peale, PA:
DO NOT DRIVE DOWN THE GROWN UP PATH; WALK IN ONLY. please no night caching and as always, please wear the required orange during hunting seasons.
There were nearly 300 buildings and a population of 2,500 souls in the place, every one of whom is employed or dependent upon those employed by the coal or railroad company. Modest homes rented for $4.25 - $6.75 per month including water. Altogether they were the most comfortable miners' cabins seen throughout the county and the rent is not high for a man earning $9 – $12 per week
This thriving town is now a ghost town with only one original building standing which is used as a camp. There is only one way in and the same way out. All that is left of Peale is an abandoned, over-grown cemetery called Oakwood Cemetery with only one surviving memorial stone in a once extensive grave yard. The inscription on the one andn only stone reads:
"Martha Renfrew, died May 16, 1886, age 74 years, 11 months” (possibly 14 years, 11 months)
