Sinn des Jakobertors war es, die Stadt Augsburg vor den bayerischen Herzögen zu schützen bzw. den Weg nach Bayern zu kontrollieren. So, wie das Tor heute erscheint, entstand es im 15. Jahrhundert. Das Jakobertor steht an dem ehemals strategisch wichtigen östlichen Rand der Jakobervorstadt und war früher Teil der Stadtmauer, die am Jakobertor ein kleines Stück nach Norden rekonstruiert ist. Anders als andere Stadttore Augsburgs, die zu Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts durch Elias Holl erneuert wurden, war der bekannte Stadtbaumeister Augsburg am Jakobertor nicht tätig. Das führte dazu, dass das Tor auch heute noch eine mittelalterliche Formensprache aufweist.
Die Anlage, wie sie heute ist, stellt einen hochmittelalterlichen Backsteinbau dar, der ursprünglich ganz verputzt war, seinen Putz aber im Lauf der Zeit vollständig verlor, weil man ihn ab dem Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts nicht mehr erneuerte. Im Wesentlichen ist der Bau so erhalten, wie ihn der Stadtplan von Jörg Seld im Jahr 1521 festhielt.

Sense of the Jakobertors was to protect the city of Augsburg against the Bavarian dukes or to control the way to Bavaria. So how the gate appears today, it originated in the 15th century. The Jakobertor stands in the formerly strategically important eastern edge of the Jakobervorstadt and was an early part of the town wall which is reconstructed in the Jakobertor a small piece to the north. Differently than other town gates of Augsburg which were renewed at the beginning of the 17th century by Elias Holl there did not act the known town master builder Augsburg in the Jakobertor. This led to the fact that the gate also shows even today a medieval use of forms.
The arrangement, as it is today, shows a highly medieval brick building which was completely plastered originally, his plaster, however, in the course of the time lost completely because one did not renew him from the beginning of the 19th century any more. Essentially the construction is so received as him the town plan of Jörg Seld stuck in 1521.
