Australia Day 2018 Event
Boracay
Australia Day is the official National Day of Australia....
The annual celebration marks the day in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip guided 11 British ships to the colony of New South Wales. Australia was originally planned as a penal colony. In October 1786, the British government commissioned Arthur Phillip to establish an agricultural work camp there for British convicts. Phillip struggled to assemble his fleet, as he didn’t know what to expect from what was a distant and unknown land. However, despite being poor funding and repeated denials for more experienced farmers to assist him, a group of 1000, including over 700 convicts and a selection of Marines, were led around Africa and over to the eastern side of Australia. The voyage took eight months, and resulted in the death of around 30 men.

The first few years after arriving were similarly difficult, with poor soil, an unfamiliar climate and workers who didn’t know anything about farming causing Phillip to struggle with keeping the men alive. For several years, the colony was close to starvation. By the 19th century, the colony had begun to succeed, with the men seeing 26th January as their founding day. In 1818, the date became an official holiday, celebrating the 30th anniversary of British settlement in Australia. Since 1994, the Australia Day public holiday has been on January 26 throughout the country, and in 2013, the Australian flag and Aboriginal flag were raised on the Sydney Harbour Bridge for the first time on Australia Day.
In present-day Australia, celebrations reflect the diverse society and landscape of the nation and are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian history, official community awards and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new members of the Australian community.
On this day, many people have a day off work and use the day among other things to barbecue, go to outdoor concerts, and to play or watch sports events. Different places in Australia celebrate the day differently. For example, Sydney has boat races including a ferry race and the tall ships race, while Adelaide celebrates with a parade, concert, fireworks, and a cricket match. Australian citizenship ceremonies are often held on Australia Day. These are ceremonies to welcome immigrants who have been granted citizenship to the country. Although official, these ceremonies often have a festive atmosphere.

This year, Signal the Frog is visiting the Southern Hemisphere for Australia Day 2018 and geocachers worldwide will be gathering at local events to celebrate and join the festivities. Australia Day is observed annually on January 26th each year with barbeques and fireworks.
