THIS MYSTERY GEOCACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES
Victoria's gold-bearing rocks are sandstones, siltstones and mudstones, deposited in deep marine conditions some 400 million years ago. Today they form a bedrock spine that runs east to west through Victoria, with the Great Divide running along the crest of Victoria's Western and Eastern Uplands.
The gold is associated with veins of milky white quartz which were intruded into the older rock after it had been uplifted, drained, folded and faulted.
Geologically speaking the Ballarat goldfields lies in the Bendigo Zone of western Victoria, hosted in the kilometres-thick Lower Ordovician Castlemaine Group, which is a greenschist grade sequence of quartz-rich turbidites. The rocks were deformed in the Silurian and then intruded in the Devonian by numerous post-tectonic I-type granites. Veneers of Cenozoic gravel deposits, that are often rich in placer gold, patchily overlie the bedrock. Much of the region is covered in Cenozoic flood basalts.
