The Lucan Bypass was first started in 1987 as a 9KM dual carriageway with hard shoulders.
By 2009 the bypass was upgraded by the widening of the existing road from two lane dual carriageway with hard shoulder, to three lane dual carriageway with bus lanes along one of the busiest roads in Ireland. The scheme included sections of split level carriageway and conversion of the at-grade signalised Newcastle Road junction to a grade separated junction.
The detailed design included all aspects of the highway widening to accommodate new traffic lanes in both directions including bus lanes and improvments at existing bus stops. 3 new bridge structures were provided from pedestrian over bridges to a new grade separted interchange at Newcastle.

There are 2 seperate plaques at GZ as permanent reminders of the different politicians of the day who officially opened the different stages of the development of the bypass.
