La Street art è nata come evoluzione di quello che veniva comunemente definito “graffitismo”. A un certo punto alcuni writer, persone dotate di una sensibilità particolare, che avevano trovato il loro spazio espressivo nel graffitismo duro e puro (anche con tutto quanto di negativo questo poteva comportare, specie l’azione in un ambito di illegalità), hanno maturato l’esigenza di evolvere il proprio stile di comunicazione, di sostituire il desiderio di puro appagamento estetico con qualcosa di più profondo e meditato.
La Street art dunque nasce come una questione creativa più personale e più ragionata, che, pur avendo sicuramente le sue solide basi in ciò che è stato (e continua ad essere) il graffitismo, sceglie una via di comunicazione diversa, meno legata al fattore puramente estetico, ma finalizzata piuttosto all’espressione di concetti. Proprio come avviene nell’arte contemporanea…
Il filo conduttore resta il rapporto dialettico con il territorio, con la realtà urbana.
Certamente, l’ambiente, la città sono luoghi portatori di una propria identità, che dialoga con l’intervento dell’artista, in funzione di quelle che sono però le sue specifiche inclinazioni. Dal punto di vista estetico, è ovvio che il graffitismo resta il punto di partenza, con il suo linguaggio visivo impattante, spesso legato ad un’estetica molto “pop”, ovvero semplice e immediata, che però viene elevata con intenti di “disordinazione” culturale, al fine di esprimere contenuti forti.

The work has moved from the beginnings of graffiti and vandalism to new modes where artists work to bring messages, or just simple beauty, to an audience.
Some artists use "smart vandalism" as a way to raise awareness of social and political issues. Others simply see urban space as an untapped format for personal artwork, while others may appreciate the challenges and risks that are associated with installing illicit artwork in public places. A common motive is that creating art in a format which utilizes public space allows artists who may otherwise feel disenfranchised to reach a much broader audience than other styles or galleries would allow.
