Oscar II Fort byggdes 1903-1907 och var i bruk fram till 1955. Under 70'-talet togs den ur krigsorganisationen. Detta är en av de få anläggningarna som är oförändrad sedan den byggdes.
Beslutet om att bygga Oscar II:s fort i Västerberget nära Käringberget i Göteborg togs 1899, och började med att Oscar II sköt det första sprängskottet den 24 augusti 1899.
Beväpningen bestod av två 24 cm kanon M/04 i självsänkande lavettage, två 15,2 cm kanon M/03B i pansartorn, fyra 57 mm kanoner i pansarkupol samt ett antal kaponjärkanoner.
Anläggningen med sitt utförande blev dock snart föråldrad i och med flygets antåg, vilket gjorde att bland annat nyttan med kanoner på självsänkande lavettage blev inaktuellt. Idén med detta var att kanonerna skulle vara osynliga till dess att de avfyrades och att rekylen direkt skulle dölja dessa igen.
Numera är Oscar II Fort en anläggning som är öppen för allmänheten under vissa dagar på året, bland annat nationaldagen 6:e Juni då även salutskjutning utförs. Vid ett besök på fortet finns också möjlighet att studera berggrunden som fortet är insprängt i.
Cachen finns utanför staketet, det finns alltså ingen anledning att ta sig in på området. Området är larmat och bevakat samt används emellanåt för militära övningar, vilket gör att olovligt tillträde avrådes starkt.

The Oscar II Fortress was built between 1903 and 1907 and was in use until 1955. It was demilitarized during the 70's. This is one of the few Swedish military installations that is unchanged since it was built.
The decision to build the fortress in Västerberget close to Käringberget in Gothenburg was made 1899, and started with the king Oscar II shooting the first blast the 24th of August 1899.
The armament was two 24cm disappearing guns M/04, two 15.2 cm cannons M/03B in turrets, four 57 mm cannons in turrets and a number of caponier cannons.
The fortress was soon dated due to the introduction of aircraft, which made the advantage of disappearing guns obsolete. The idea with the disappearing guns was that they were hidden from view until fired and the recoil hid the gun again.
Today the Oscar II Fortress is a public display museum open under certain days during the year, among them the Swedish National day 6th of June where a salute is shot. At a visit to the fortress it's also possible to study the geology that houses the fortress.
The cache is outside the fence, there is therefore no reason to enter the area. The area is monitored both electronically and by guards and is also used for military exercises, which means that unauthorized visits are strongly discouraged.
