Geocache Description:

A cache of the Auld Deid Roads and Auld Deid Railways series.

These caches have been placed along disused parts of railways, or roads that have been re-routed or expanded. There will always be a safe parking area waypoint listed so please park here. Enjoy exploring the auld roads and railways, and discover the tracks of yesterday, and the evolution of today's infrastructure.

The A90 that runs past Ellon today, once ran as the A92 through the town. Heading north from 'Ellon's Auld A92' of the Auld Deid Roads series, the auld road branches away from the present carriageway again at the Mill of Waterton. The auld A92 goes past the Mill heading NW, and crosses beneath the Boddam railway line. Parking for this cache is on the auld road itself, where it leaves the current road and heads north under the bridge. From here, walk through the bridge supports and follow the auld road which rejoins the current A90 roughly 250 metres past the railway bridge. This small section is no longer recognised as a road and nature is slowly but resolutely taking the land back for itself.

The railway line from Ellon to Boddam  opened in 1897. The stations were, Achmcoy, Pitlurg, Hatton, Cruden Bay, Buller's Halt, Longhaven and Boddam. The passenger service ended in 1932 due to the rural location, and from then only goods used the line until 1945 when it was closed completely, and dismantled in 1950. sEctions of the line have been used for beekeeping, camping, moving stock etc but very little signs of the railway itself remain beyond the level passageway it cut through the land itself.

The cache is near a mound of hardcore, but you will have to leave the road and climb up towards the trees.
