The Nowhere Cache Multi-Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

Southerntrekker: Hi There

This cache has been flagged by Geocaching HQ or through a Needs Archive Log as one that may need attention. I notice that no action has been taken by the owner, to correct the issue. Please, could the owner please check this cache and give an indication of when it may be sorted out. If there is no response to this log after 30 days I will archive the cache. In the meantime I am disabling it.

Guidelines:

  • You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to ensure it is in proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.) or posts a Needs Maintenance log. Temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have addressed the problem.
You are permitted a reasonable amount of time --generally, up to 4 weeks – in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing.

Could the cache owner please place a note on the cache page so that other cachers and I can see what your intentions are?

Please do not e-mail me with the update. It may be one of my colleagues who checks your cache again and they won't know you contacted me. It's a good idea with a cache you've disabled and which may take a while to sort out to post a note once a month so people (and reviewers!) know you are still dealing with it. This will also prevent us from chasing you up and sending more e-mails!

Geocache Description:

Looking at the geocaching map, there's a distinct lack of caches in one area, centered around Burgess Park.

Why? It's not the middle of nowhere! Instead, it's the beautiful Burgess Park, with its many amenities and interesting history. It's one of the biggest parks in London! The friends of Burgess Park have created a history trail with information plaques, called 'Bridge to Nowhere', which you can learn more about here:  http://www.bridgetonowhere.friendsofburgesspark.org.uk

This cache makes use of three of the sites the trail highlights. You need to find six numbers (a, b, c and x, y, z) which will then let you find the final.

The Grand Surrey Canal used to run along the length of Burgess Park. Coal and limestone brought along the canal was burnt in the lime kiln at Stage 1 to make quicklime, which was then transported off again along the canal.
a - Add the first two numbers of the year the kiln was built/founded
b - Add 3 to the lime kiln's grade (google is your friend...)
c - Subtract 7 from the number of years it took to build the canal.

Walk from the west to the east side of the park using the tunnel, which also reminds us of the canal that used to be here and the barges that travelled along it.
Stage 2: N 51° 28.926' W 000° 05.134'
x - Number of green bottles in the boat

As you walk towards the next stage, make sure to take notice of the 'Camberwell Beauty'! It used to be the trademark of local stationers Samuel Jones & Co and was moved here when their factory was demolished in 1982.

The building at Stage 3 contained a library, public baths and wash house. There were two larger communal baths and 50 bathtubs - the cheapest option was to take a cold bath for the equivalent of 30p!
Stage 3: N 51° 28.943' W 0° 5.137'
y - The foundation stone was laid on this day in 1901, add the two numbers
z - It was opened in 190? Multiply the last number by 2.

The final is a short walk away, at N 51° 28.abc W 000° 04.xyz

I hope you've enjoyed the park and learning some of its history. It's always hard to find a roomy box in London to pass on travelbugs with slightly larger attachments. Hopefully this one will prove useful!
