Banteay Kdei is a monastery complex built in Angkor from the mid-12th to the beginning of the 13th century under King Jayavarman VII (1181-1220). The construction resembles the Ta Prohm, but is less decorated and smaller. Because of the poor construction and the brittle sandstone he is in poor condition today.
King Jayavarman VII had him built as the first of three monastic complexes (before Ta Prohm and Neak Pean) in Angkor for his teacher.
