East Hampshire has been home to some of Britain's literary greats and you can follow in their footsteps… Gilbert White, William Cobbett and in this case, our favourite, Jane Austen!
The Jane Austen Trail runs between Chawton, where Jane lived and wrote, and Alton where she often visited.
Jane’s house in Chawton which she lived in from 1809 until 1817 and shared with her mother, sister Cassandra and friend Martha Lloyd is where she wrote, revised and had published all her major works. These include; Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.
The route of the trail is available on a PDF which can be downloaded from the Jane Austen Trail website here: http://www.janeaustentrail.org.uk
The cache is a Nano so there’s no space for swaps, but we have managed to squeeze in an appropriate “medal” for the FTF!
Note: The cache is placed on a public footpath leading from quiet residential streets in Chawton and Alton. There's no need to leave the footpath and we’d suggest walking from Chawton.
It is NOT accessible from the nearby A31 dual carriageway. Do not stop or park your car on the A31 or try to approach the cache by crossing over the A31. The footpath is through an underpass under the road, it does not cross over the A31. The cache can be reached without leaving the footpath at all.
