You have been taken here because this is a good place to spot red-tailed hawks. They are the only hawk that is commonly found at RSPP throughout the year. Red-tailed hawks have been known to nest at the Park – their nests are large, the size of 28 – 38 inches wide, 4 to 21 meters above the ground.
The cry of a red-tailed hawk is well-known because it is typically depicted in movies to (incorrectly) represent any eagle or hawk from anywhere in the world. Being the most common hawk in northeast America, you’ve probably also heard and seen the hawk outdoors.
The Red-tailed Hawk is one of the largest birds you’ll see in North America, yet even the biggest females weigh in at only about three pounds.
Red-tailed hawks are an important member of our ecosystem, being a carnivore, feeding on small mammals and rodents, including mice (mice carry lyme disease).
