Geocache Description:


An easy multi near a part of Halswell's history. You are looking for a small camo container. This can be a very busy spot at time so take care.

HALSWELL HISTORY TIMELINE
1848  Three families lived in Halswell
1856 Halswell Quarry opened
1859  Travellers from Prebbleton,  Lincoln, Tai Tapu all pass through five-junction-road in Halswell
1860 At least 60 men worked in Halswell at the Halswell Quarry, with timber, early flax, pastoral and transport activities
1860 Land set aside for the Halswell Domain
1861 School was opened in Dunbars Road, then it was bought by the Wesleyans and turned into a girl's boarding school
1863 Mother Craythornes pub was opened 
1864 Halswell's population: 138 people and the Halswell School opens
1867  The Halswell Flax Company was established and six tonnes of products were carried to the city each week
1869 The Spreydon Arms Hotel established where Halswell Timber now stands.  (closed 1872 pulled down 1930s)
1869 William Nicholls Woolscour established in Nottingham Stream 
Prior to 1900 Quarry horse and dray managed two trips per day to the city to deliver stone
1870s Laugh and Sheath Flaxworks opened
1873s Post office opened in a local store
1873 Cobb and Co.  Akaroa coach begins
1873  Tom Mullins buys Craythornes pub and later rebuilds two storey hotel
1875  Charles Candy began dairying and cheesemaking
1883 F W Quaife set up his bacon factory
1883 Halswell acted as a port for timber and farm products from Little River and timber from Leeston
1890s  First steam engine to power first mechanical crusher to make even sized stone chip
1900 to 1926 A traction engine was used by the quarry it could pull several trailers and do three trips per day
1903 First steam powered crusher at the quarry
1904 Halswell Sports Club asked the board to form a race track and to hold annual sports gatherings
1913 Halswell Hall opened
1920s  Introduction of White, Dennis and Thorney solid-tyred trucks which could carry 4-5 tonnes of rock at quarry
1922 Halswell Road sealed
1924 Halswell War Memorial unveiled
By 1934 A few street lights had been installed on Hoon Hay, Sparks and Lincoln Road
1937  Akaroa Highway sealed as far as Motukarara
1939 Three miles of footpath sealed on Halswell Road
1940s  Rail operated facet shovel and dumping truck  in the quarry replaced the rail system and its tipping trucks
1948 Sparks and Sabys Road were sealed
Between 1950 and 1960 Lights were installed in the Halswelltownship
1950s  Regular dances, socials and parades to raise money for school
1952 Kennedys Bush subdivided
1958  Water tanks prohibited due to high water table and effluent entering the road gutters in the wet seasons
By 1955 30% of Halswell's roads had been sealed
1958-64  1 1/2 miles of roads were sealed per year
1958  Health services established in one of the shops in Lillian St
1958  Cunningham Oaklands Estate subdivided
1964 Halswell United Football Club had its early beginnings when three neighbours formed a club
1970s Baptist church built
1971  Halswell Swimming Club completed in 1971
1975 Halswell Football United Clubrooms were built
1980s Halswell Medical Centre and the HalswellDental Clinic established
1980s-1990s Muir park, Westlake, Rearsby Drive and Wentworth Park were being developed
1990  Halswell Quarry ceased production.  A local neighbourhood association presented to the council a plan designed by David Tucker, a student of landscape architecture at Lincoln University that was similar to a  garden plan seen in Canada to the council and the idea was accepted. Tracks were developed and the Halswell Lions developed the old stone cottage as a historical museum
1990s  Timetabled bus services for Halswell
1991-2001 Oaklands and Westlake had a history of rapid growth at three the rate of the whole of the city
2004  Halswell-Wigram  is identified in the proposed city plan as one of the city's major urban expansion areas
