pitch a fit
-When someone (often a child) pitches a fit, it means that they are throwing a temper tantrum, crying and screaming to get what they want. The history behind this phrase is very murky. The only connection I can find to its definition is that to pitch means 'to throw (something).' The verb most likely comes to us from Old English picianor piccean 'to prick.' A little before 1200 CE it had evolved into pihte, from picchen 'to thrust or drive something' - this is where we get the phrase to pitch a tent (1297 CE).' By 1380 CE, the second definition 'to throw' was added. Returning to the original phrase pitch a fit, it seems that English speakers simply swapped out throw for its synonym in pitch without modifying the phrase's meaning.
