This was a geocache container which hung around for 18 months at home before it was assembled and a suitable hiding place was found.
You may find you need a wrench to open it, as it may be stiff!
The vulture restaurant was originally just an area where carcases were laid for the vultures, and the human visitors had to scramble over a ridge of rock hoping to see some vultures feeding. In 2012 a brick and glass hide was constructed, which makes it more appealing to human visitors, but the decreasing number of vultures is evidenced by the low number of sightings of the rare Cape and Bearded Vultures.
The hide is worth a visit, even if only for the interesting flora on the walkway, and the antics of the smaller raptors doing their aerial displays.
There is a conservation fee payable at the campsite/ cottage reception if you are going to go to the hide, or do any of the lovely walks in the Golden Gate reserve. It is a small fee, and well worth it for the beauty that one experiences among these spectacular mountains
The geocache is not a typical box container. It is not far off the track, so please don't walk too far and destroy the vegetation! Please beware of muggles, and replace the lid carefully.
