Durante una oscura noche de mayo de 1892 tres ladrones asaltaron un descuidado palacete ubicado extramuros de Segovia, cerca del cache, construido hacía entonces cuatro siglos por la familia Ayala-Berganza. Su propietario era un caballero un tanto misterioso de origen francés, que habitaba en la enorme casona acompañado solamente de una sirvienta y un gato. La casa no tenía medidas de protección, como las que hoy en día hubieran quizás evitado el delito, pero el robo debió ir mal porque los habitantes se despertaron y debieron intentar defenderse, así que los ladrones decidieron asesinarlos, incluso al gato, al que colgaron de una viga.

Como es natural, el horrendo crimen causó un gran revuelo, no sólo en Segovia, sino en toda España, lo que motivó a las autoridades a una frenética y exhaustiva búsqueda de los culpables que culminó con la detención, juicio y condena de los tres asesinos dos años más tarde, quienes fueron ejecutados no lejos del lugar del delito.

La comprensible y algo supersticiosa reticencia popular hacia la casa hizo que permaneciera deshabitada durante bastantes años, hasta que el pintor Ignacio Zuloaga la utilizó como taller para algunas de las obras que realizó durante su estancia en la ciudad, entre ellas “Las Brujas de San Millán”, pintado en 1907 y que alude indirectamente al ambiente tétrico de aquel entorno.

Posteriormente la casona quedó semi abandonada, hasta que ya bien entrado este siglo fue restaurada y convertida en un moderno hotel.

Pero algunos afirman que el fantasma del antiguo dueño aparece de vez en cuando, en noches sin luna, en la escalera donde se encontró su cadáver, mientras que otros añaden que el de la sirvienta también se presenta a veces con el de su amo; en cuanto al gato, parece ser que de momento no se ha ectoplasmizado en público, aunque yo no estaría muy seguro dada la dificultad de distinguir un animal real de uno fantasmal tratándose de felinos rápidos y escurridizos.

In a dark night in May 1892, three thieves entered a derelict mansion in the outskirts of Segovia, near the cache, build four centuries earlier by the then powerful Ayala-Berganza family. Its only occupants were a mysterious and lonely gentleman of French origin, accompanied by an old servant and a cat. The house obviously had little protection (no alarms or cameras in those days), but the robbery didn’t go well because the owner woke up and tried to fight the thieves, who killed him and then decided to kill the servant too, while the cat was hanged from a beam, for good measure.

Such an awful crime created a huge stir, and not only in Segovia, so that the authorities put its maximum effort in capturing the murderers, which were finally found out two years later and executed not very far from the place of their crime.

The house was considered haunted after this episode, and remained unoccupied for quite a few years until the famous painter Ignacio Zuloaga rented it to use as workshop during its stay in Segovia, and it was here that he created in 1907 “The witches of San Millan”, a dark painting obviously influenced by the grim environment.

Afterwards the big house remained neglected for many years until the early years of this century, when it was refurbished and transformed in a modern hotel.

Some people assert that the ghost of the former owner appears from time to time, in particular in moonless nights, in the stair where its body was found, while others add that his servant’s ghost usually accompanies him. Regarding the cat, there has been so far no known appearance, but I would not be sure about this, given the difficulty in telling apart a real from a ghostly animal, especially when it is a quick and slippery feline.
