De eerste sporen van de St.-Katarinaparochie dateren van 1230. Het grondgebied ervan is in de loop van de tijd nogal wat gewijzigd tot in 1910 de huidige grenzen ervan werden vastgelegd, o.a. door de bevolkingstoename ten gevolge van de vestiging van het belangrijke metaalbedrijf ‘La Brugeoise’ rond 1905 op het grondgebied van St.-Michiels.
Ook de kerk van de parochie heeft een hele geschiedenis achter de rug. Niet alleen stond ze op een andere plaats dan het huidige gebouw, ze werd ook tot tweemaal toe door opstanden en godsdienstoorlogen gesloopt. Heel lang heeft de parochie het zonder kerkgebouw moeten stellen. In 1910 kon de kapel van het klooster van de zusters van Spermalie van Brugge (toen gelegen in de St.-Katarinastraat) als noodkerk voor de nieuwgevormde parochie gebruikt worden.
De bouw van een nieuwe kerk liep door de eerste wereldoorlog heel wat vertraging op en het duurde nog tot 1933 vooraleer er werd gestart met het huidige gebouw en ook met de bouw van de pastorie ernaast. Op 16 mei 1934 kon de parochiekerk eindelijk ingezegend worden.
In 1974 maakte stad Brugge een uitweg naast de kerk, gedeeltelijk in de hof van de pastorie, om zo de nieuwe wijk achter de kerk dichter bij de kern te brengen. Ook het kerkplein werd toen verfraaid.
Kerken zijn plaatsen van stilte, rust en bezinning. Loop gerust even binnen en geniet van het opvallende interieur. Bekijk ook de merkwaardige verwerking van de gasverwarmingsinstallatie in de metalen sculpturen, een ontwerp van Johan Delaere uit de jaren 90; wellicht een knipoog van de architect naar de metaalactiviteit aan de overzijde van het kanaal die aan de basis lag van het ontstaan van de huidige parochie.

The first traces of the parish of St. Catherine date from 1230. Its territory changed quite a lot during the centuries until its boundaries were determined in 1910, because of, among other things, a serious growth of the population as a result of the important new steel factory ‘La Brugeoise’ around 1905 in the municipality of St.-Michiels across the canal.
The historical background of the parish church itself is quite remarkable too. Not only was the original location different from the present building, it was also demolished twice by rebellions and religious wars. For a very long time the parish had to live without a church building. In 1910 the chapel of the convent of the sisters of Spermalie (at that time situated in the St. Katerina street) could be used as a temporary church for the newly formed parish and its expanding community.
The construction of the new church was delayed for quite some time because of the first world war and it lasted up to 1933 before they started with the present building and the neighbouring presbytery. The inauguration could finally take place on May 16, 1934.
In 1974 the council of Bruges decided to have a passageway built next tot he church, partly running through the garden of the presbytery, to make closer contact possible between the christians living behind the church and the heart of the community at the front. At the same time the grounds in front of the church were renovated and beautified with flower beds.
Churches are places of peace and quiet, and contemplation. Feel free to step inside and enjoy the special character of the interior. The most striking feature is the elaboration of the gas heating in the metal sculptures, designed by Johan Delaere around the 90s; probably a hint of the architect pointing to the metal activity at the other side of the canal that was actually at the base of the rise of the present parish.
