I placed this cache primarily to call attention to this awesome trail.
Tunnel Drive was constructed in 1908 as part of a project that brought water from the Royal Gorge to Cañon City. The gravity flow pipeline was abandoned in the 1960s in favor of wells. The road remained open until 1990 at which time the bridges were deemed unsafe for motor vehicles. The road was closed, and after some rehabilitation was reopened as a trail for foot. bicycle, and horseback use only. In 2016 the trailhead was improved to include paving and rest rooms.
The trail runs for two miles (four miles round trip) along the Arkansas River. It passes through several tunnels and over a couple of bridges. The first 0.2 mile is uphill and the rest of the trail is level. There are several geocaches of varying degrees of difficulty along the trail.
The cache is in the trail head parking lot. Do not go outside the fence. Log only, bring your own calligraphy instrument.
