Paparoa "The Village in the Valley "..is north of Auckland, past Maungataroto and before Matakohe and Dargaville .
My interest in the area is that my paternal forebears lived near here , several generations ago ..
European Settlers arrived here in 1862. The landscape changed dramatically within 100 years from Kauri Bush to mainly pastoral
Logging began here in 1886 : and at this Landing the logs were held prior to rafting to sawmills . It was a vital link .
The tidal streams in this whole area were vital for getting provisions in from a Steamer which unloaded at Pahi , 9 km away.
This area now is a lovely place to pause on your journey ....it has lovely tall shady trees ,and the jetty and the river arm nearby. Car parking ;Tables and chairs ,,,, and a toilet block fairly close by . Plus small playground; and a walkway to another geocache ! Enjoy this rest area which is so rich in history.
