AMNHA: Quarry Explosives Storage Box

Cache Info: This is a medium sized plastic ammunition container. The GZ is located in the woods beyond the storage box.

The storage box was used to store explosives for quarrying operations during the early part of the 20th century. During quarrying, explosives were used only to “raise ledges”. Raising a ledge facilitated the quarrying. The process of raising a ledge started by drilling a two to three inch diameter hole in the rock to a depth equal to the desired thickness of the ledge. Then a small charge of black powder was placed in the bottom of the hole and the hole was filled with clay.

The charge was then set off. Successively larger charges were set off over a period of six months. Finally, the hole was cleared out in preparation for forcing compressed air into the hole. This last step was withheld until a hot summer day when the air pressure in combination with the differential expansion of the rock caused the rock to horizontally rift over a large surface area. Quarrying started where the rift plane intersected the ground surface. The quarry face became progressively higher as quarrying proceeded

Park at the Arabia Mountain Nature Center Parking Lot on Klondike Road and take the bike path south to a tree with an L shaped trunk where you can cross Klondike Road .
Proceed around the gate and take the woods road to the rock outcrop.
From the rock entrance portal take a southeast bearing to bypass several vertical rock faces.
Turn northeast at the coordinates noted below and proceed to the cache.

Most geocachers will first visit the North Peak Cache.
From there, find a safe route to the Explosives Storage Cache by taking an easterly route to bypass boulder areas.
