Gathland Park's Spook Hill
Gathland Park, on the outskirts of Burkkitsville, was the site of the Civil War battle for Crampton's Gap, which took place on September 14, 1862. There is a Civil War Correspondents' Memorial Arch to commemorate the battle, but there's a more surreal experience to be had in this area. There is a location called Spook Hill, and its one of the nations famous paranormal spots. As the story goes, you can set your car in neutral on this slope and feel yourself begin to roll uphill.
The battle at Crampton's Gap was a decisive one in the Civil War, and the confederate forces did not come off well in it. They were outnumbered six to one and lost almost 900 men. This was the first Union victory against Lee's armies and was a direct antecedent of the bloodbath at Anteitam only 3 days later, which was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. The sheer volume of Confederate dead led to some pretty unpleasant tales of mass interment.
The effect of the hill, they say, is caused by the ghosts of Confederate soldiers, struggling almost a hundred and sixty years later to get their cannons into position at the top of the hill in hopes to win the battle..
To test the paranormal activity of Spook Hill yourself, you should take your vehicle and be facing east on Gapland Road towards the town of Burkittsville. Bring your car to a complete stop just past the 25MPH speed limit sign. Place your car into neutral and you will slowly begin to roll uphill towards the peak of the hill. Going faster, and faster until you have reached the top. The cache is accessible at all times of day, the night recommendation attribute is for the effect of Spook Hill to increase the creepiness level.
