One of the Preserve’s Most Traveled Trails
The Forest Trail is one of the two most traveled trails in the Nature Preserve, and it has been here since DeKalb County acquired the first 485 acres of land in 1972.
Like many older trails, it reflects a different era of trail design. Some sections follow the land well, while others cut more directly across the slope.
Why Erosion Happens Here
Trails that cross the contours of a hillside too directly can become channels for rainwater. Instead of shedding water off to the side, the trail begins to carry it downhill.
Over time, that flow can build up across long stretches, causing erosion and wearing the trail deeper into the landscape.
On steeper sections, the problem becomes even more serious. The greater the grade, the faster water moves and the harder it becomes to manage.

A Trail That Tells a Story
The Forest Trail is one of the most challenging trails in the preserve to maintain. Every curve, slope, and worn section reflects the ongoing push and pull between use, weather, and the natural shape of the land.
As you hike, notice how the trail sits across the hillside and where erosion has taken hold.
Even the trail itself becomes part of the story of this landscape.
