A Pond Created by Change

This seasonal pond exists because of quarrying. When rock was removed from this area, a shallow depression was left behind, allowing water to collect during wetter months.

In winter and spring, the pond fills with water. During the summer and fall, it often shrinks or nearly disappears, creating a cycle that defines the habitat found here.

A Hidden Breeding Ground

During late winter and early spring, salamanders gather here to breed. Arabia Mountain is home to at least two species, including the spotted salamander and the marbled salamander.

The female deposits a clear, gelatinous mass filled with dozens of eggs. As the mass is released, it expands in the water, and the male fertilizes it shortly afterward.

These egg masses are fragile and represent the next generation of salamanders. Please do not touch them.

A Temporary World

Seasonal ponds like this play an important role in the ecosystem. Because they do not hold water year-round, fish are typically absent, giving amphibians a safer place to reproduce.

What may look like a simple, shallow pool is actually a carefully timed environment that supports life during a very specific window each year.

In a different way, AMNHA: Endangered Plant Pits tells a similar story, showing how even the smallest, most easily overlooked spaces on the rock can support rare and specialized life.

A place shaped by quarrying now supports one of the most delicate life cycles on the mountain.
