A Legacy Preserved
This forest stands as a lasting tribute to Helen Meador Boyd, whose legacy helped protect and expand the green space you are exploring today.
Helen Meador Boyd passed away in 2000 at the age of 97. She owned a 40-acre tract of land extending north from Rockland Road. As interest grew in preserving Arabia Mountain’s natural landscape, this property became an important opportunity to expand the Nature Preserve.

Her son, Ben Boyd, a supporter of conservation efforts and a friend of Arabia Alliance leadership, agreed to sell the land to DeKalb County for half of its appraised value. This generous decision came with one condition: that the land be preserved and dedicated in honor of his mother.
With support from community leaders, including Governor Roy Barnes, the acquisition moved forward, and the land was officially designated as the Helen Meador Boyd Memorial Forest.

Today, as you move through this forest, you are walking through a space made possible by a family’s decision to protect land for future generations.
Like several places across the Arabia Mountain area, this landscape reflects how personal decisions and public preservation can come together to shape what future visitors are able to experience.
Some of the most lasting footprints are the ones that protect what remains.
