AMNHA: Changing Forest

Cache Info: This is a medium sized plastic ammunition container.

The forest you have been walking through is slowly changing. Many decades ago, most of the forests in the Nature Preserve were logged or cut down to facilitate agriculture. During the great depression of the l930’s many of the agricultural sites were abandoned and the process of re-growth began, starting with shrubs and predominately pines. Today, the forest you are in has become a mixed pine and hardwood forest as the more shade tolerant hardwoods slowly take over. The percentage of pine trees is going down. The pines are more susceptible to blow down, beetle infestation, and disease and they are not shade tolerant.

As you make your way back to the Nature Center, notice the numbers of pines that have been brought down and are decaying on the forest floor. Within another hundred years, few pines will remain. A stable hardwood climax forest will exist.

Park at the Arabia Mountain Nature Center Parking Lot on Klondike road. Proceed north on the bike path to the cache .
