A Forest in Transition
The forest around you is not fixed. It is slowly changing, shaped by time, disturbance, and regrowth.
Many decades ago, much of the forest in this preserve was logged or cleared for agriculture. When many of those fields were abandoned during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the process of regrowth began.
The first wave of returning trees was made up largely of pines and shrubs. Over time, however, the forest began to shift again.
From Pines to Hardwoods
Today, this area is becoming a mixed pine and hardwood forest. As the years pass, more shade-tolerant hardwoods continue to fill in beneath the pines.
The percentage of pine trees is slowly decreasing. Pines are less tolerant of shade and more vulnerable to blowdown, beetle infestation, and disease. As older pines fall, hardwoods take their place.
What you are seeing here is part of a long natural progression toward a more stable hardwood forest.

What to Notice
As you make your way through the area, notice the fallen pines decaying on the forest floor. These trees are part of the transition, returning nutrients to the soil as the forest continues to change.
Within another hundred years, few pines may remain here. In their place, a mature hardwood climax forest could dominate the landscape.
Even a quiet forest is always becoming something new.
