Newtownhamilton or simply Newtown to locals is a small town in South Armagh. Before the Plantation of Ulster it was known as Tullyvallen and was renamed by Alexander Hamilton in 1773 and was once an important stop off between Armagh and Dundalk. The town has suffered in past decades from the rise of other towns in the area like Markethill, Castleblaney and Bessbrook as well as cities like Newry and Armagh becoming little more than a group of houses and small shops. This series will highlight a few local areas of history and interest.
As part of the councils policy of wasting money, it was decided to erect a new sign here to mark the county border. Since the year 0000BC, there has never been a sign here so in this time of tightening the pursestrings in wasn't perhaps the best use of money. Furthermore, the sign was designed with Irish at the top and English below it. Given that this is a unionist area, bets were quickly placed on how long the sign would remain. In the end , it survived longer than most expected but has now been replaced with an invisible one thus turning a Pointless sign into a signless point.
