Geocache Description:

CONGRATULATIONS JyNu - FIRST TO FIND and all the way from Finland!!!

This cache is placed close to peaceful St Andrew's Church but not within the grounds. It is a micro tube container. You should be able to locate with a very careful visual search to avoid damaging the host. A pen and tweezers may also be required.

Please take time to go inside this beautiful country church. It contains many interesting features.

Dating back to the twelfth century, it is believed that the Norman church of St Andrew's, with its fourteenth century oak porch, has Saxon origins, shown by its unusual circular graveyard. The church boasts many medieval features, including a rare 'squint' between the main part of the church and the altar area, which allowed the congregation to glimpse what was happening at the altar. There are also two interesting carvings of the Hereford School.

More about St Andrew's Church, Stockton-on-Teme

This Norman church built in 1120, stands in a circular Saxon churchyard. It has a single aisle and several unusual features. The wooden porch and the roof beams and trusses of the nave are 14th century. On either side of the chancel arch are two carved figures, one of the Angus Dei, and the other of a wolf or lion. There is a squint on the right hand side of the arch.

By the altar is an unusual wooden tomb to Thomas Walshe (1593) whose father was chancellor to Henry VIII. It has the appearance of marble. There is also the tomb of Redulphus the first recorded Rector of Stockton, who took up his office on 12th November 1284.

A leaflet giving more detailed and interesting information is available for visitors inside the church.

The church is the only communal village space, as there is no village hall hence the church community is encouraging everyone in the village to use the church for local events. These are typically in the warmer months until the heating in the church is improved.

Please avoid visiting during church service times unless you wish to join the congregation.
I'm sure you would be made most welcome.
