The cache is located on the edge of the pretty ancient moorland village of Edmundbyers with parking space at the GZ.
According to records settlements of some kind have been here ever since the Mesolithic period and through the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman period.
Seemingly, in 1673 several women of Edmundbyers were tried at Newcastle Assizes for acts of witchcraft, although no record of the outcome of the trial has been found.
In more recent times the local leadmining industry was important for the area but this died out in the late 20th century and Edmundbyers returned to being a quiet rural village.
The village has two pubs, a shop, a church and village hall.
