Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of caches designed to introduce you to the Fanad Peninsula which is situated between Mulroy Bay and Lough Swilly in Co. Donegal. Whatever your interests there is plenty to enjoy - magnificent scenery and beaches, walking, fishing, golfing and bird watching to name but a few. There are also plenty of places to eat, drink and enjoy the local 'craic'!

Seal Beach.

This area of coastline is home to a colony of seals. Look closely and you may spot some in the sea or basking on the rocks that are offshore to the northeast. The Grey Seal is the larger of the two species that commonly breed around the Irish coast. Most grey seay have a mottled coat of fur that ranges in colour form dark grey to brown. They can be identified by their long muzzle and straight snout. The breeding season is between August and December.

In winter you may see Great Northern Divers. They occur along the Irish coastline between September and April and are usually observed as single birds or small groups. They are the most numerous of the divers occurring in Ireland and are particularly abundant off the south, west and northwest coasts over the winter. Great Northern Divers occur along a variety of coastlines, particularly deeper bays and inlets, as well as shallow bays with sandy shores. They can forage up to 10 km offshore and numbers close to shore tend to be highest when winds blow onshore.

The Cache is a micro tube hidden within a natural outer container. Please do not try to remove the tube, but simply open the lid and remove the log. Tweezers will be required and do remember to bring your own pen.

Parking is available at the posted coordinates. Please make a note in your log of how many seals were observed.

Enjoy.
