This cache is part of the Rockefeller 2018 Winter Series. The original had incorrect coordinates listed. Thanks very much to birder428 for coming all the way down to help get this cache back up and deep appologies to all those who came out to look for the cache the first time around.
To get to the cache site from Swan Lake, you must have walked past a very small meadow. That meadow would have been a good spot for a bluebird nesting box. If you didn't notice the small meadow, look again on your way back to the lake.
The Eastern Bluebird has a quiet, musical call, a rising chur-lee, extended in song to chur-lee chur-lee. it is found in open woodlands, like this spot or above the meadow at Overlook.
A serious decline in the bluebird population in recent decades is in part a result of a higer competition bewteen bluebirds and the house sparrow for nestingsites. At RSPP, they seem to be doing better than average, partly due to the maintained upkeep of 22 bluebird nesting boxes on the Preserve.
In 2017, three of Rockefeller's most dedicated volunteers monitored these 22 nest boxes for bluebird activity. They discovered that 12 of the 22 boxes were used by bluebirds. Among these 12 occupied nests, 8 nested successfully and 6 failed, with a total of 59 bluebird eggs laid and 28 bluebirds fledged
